In September MPB Education kicks off the MPB Library Literacy Tour in different communities across Mississippi. These events will take place on the last Saturday of the month and are geared to children Pre-K to 8 years old and their families. However, all family members are welcome.

At each event, children and their families will watch a PBS KIDS program, complete fun activities related to the program and read a book. MPB’s Ed Said, the rapping, rhyming purple character that promotes health and wellness, will also participate in the tour. 

On September 30, 2023, we had a great time at the Laurel-Jones County Library in Laurel, MS. Our featured guest, Ed Said, brought smiles to all participants, children, and adults alike!

The event featured an episode of PBS KIDS’ s Curious George, a read-aloud of Max Explains Everything: Grocery Store by Stacy McAnulty, a dance along with Ed Said, and a creative craft activity. We appreciate everyone who attended the event and the support of the Central Mississippi Regional Library System.

On August 26, 2023, we had a great time at the Carthage-Leake County Library in Carthage, MS. Our featured guest, Ed Said, brought smiles to all participants, children, and adults alike!

On May 6, 2023, we had a great time at the Madison County Library during this stop of the MPB Library Literacy Tour featuring Ed Said! On February 25, 2023, we had a great time at the Hattiesburg, Petal, and Forrest County Library during the February stop of the MPB Library Literacy Tour featuring Ed Said! The event featured an episode of PBS KIDS’ Pinkalicious & Peterrific , a read-aloud of Hello, my name is Tiger by Jennifer P. Goldfinger, a dance along with Ed Said, and a creative craft activity. On January 28th, 2022, we had a great time at the Medgar Evers Library during the January stop of the MPB Library Literacy Tour featuring Ed Said! The event featured an episode of PBS KIDS’ Rosie Rules, a read-aloud of We're Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury, dance along with Ed Said, and a creative craft activity. On August 27, 2022, we had a great time at the Washington County Library during the August stop of the MPB Library Literacy Tour featuring Ed Said! The event featured an episode of PBS KIDS’ Let's Go Luna, a read-aloud of Tinyville Town Time For School - written by Brian Biggs, dance along with Ed Said, and a creative craft activity. On July 30, 2022, we had a great time at the Attala County Library during the July stop of the MPB Library Literacy Tour featuring Ed Said! The event featured an episode of PBS KIDS’ Molly of Denali, a read-aloud of The Rainbow Fish - written and illustrated by Marcus Pfister, dance along with Ed Said, and a creative craft activity. On May 28, 2022, we had a great time at the Purvis Public Library during the May stop of the MPB Library Literacy Tour featuring Ed Said! The event featured an episode of PBS KIDS’ Donkey Hodie, a read-aloud of The Impossible Mountain - written and illustrated by David Soman, dance along with Ed Said, and a creative craft activity. We had a great time at the Brandon Public Library during the April stop of the MPB Library Literacy Tour featuring Ed Said! The event featured an episode of PBS KIDS’ Curious George, a read-aloud of I am the Wind, by Michael Karg, and a creative craft activity. After all that, Ed Said led us in a fun dance, and he stayed after the program to take pictures with families. We appreciate everyone who attended the event, and the support of the Central Mississippi Regional Library System. Saturday, March 26, 2022, the Library Literacy Tour took place at the Ridgeland Public Library. Families viewed a Ready Jet Go episode, a read-aloud, and enjoyed a family activity. A lucky participant won a PBS KIDS Playtime Tablet, and their family received a special gift. Participating families received a book, courtesy of our partners, the Mississippi Library Commission, and the local library. 

On February 26, 2022, the Pinkalicious and Peterrific stop of the MPB Library Literacy Tour was hosted by the Judge George W. Armstrong Library in Natchez, MS. Children and parents watched a segment of Pinkalicious and Peterrific, a PBS KIDS program designed to encourage preschool-age kids to explore the arts and develop their creativity. During the event, children participated in a “Create Your Own Sock Puppet,” which was developed by PBS Learning Media as an extension of the Pinkalicious and Peterrific segment that had been screened earlier. They also participated in a live read-aloud of Muddy: The Story of Blues Legend Muddy Waters, written by Michael Mahin and illustrated by Evan Turk. There was a pre-recorded segment featuring Ed Said, which promoted healthy eating habits and physical activity. At the conclusion of the event, a child was selected at random to win a PBS Playtime Tablet. 

Our first stop of the tour was at the Orange Grove Library - Harrison County Library System. This event featured Daniel Tiger. Families viewed a Daniel Tiger episode, enjoyed a family activity, and a read-aloud by MPB's Ed Said.

Our second stop of the tour was at the Lincoln Lawrence Franklin Regional Library in Brookhaven, MS. This event featured Clifford the Big Red Dog. Families viewed a Clifford the Big Red Dog episode, enjoy a family activity, and a read-aloud and a special appearance by MPB's Ed Said. One lucky participant won a PBS KIDS Playtime Tablet and his/her family received a special gift.

Our third stop of the tour was at the Medgar Evers Library in Jackson, Mississippi. This event featured Nature Cat. Families viewed a Nature Cat episode, enjoyed a family activity, and a read-aloud by MPB's Ed Said. One lucky participant won a PBS KIDS Playtime Tablet and his/her family received a special gift.

In partnership with the Mississippi Library Commission and libraries across the state, the MPB Library Literacy Tour featuring Ed Said will have events virtually or in-person the last Saturday of the month from July to October and January to May.
